Significant Fossil Discovery by Raymond Darter

In 1924, while preparing for a wedding, Raymond Darter, a young anatomy professor at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, received what would become the major fossil discovery of the twentieth century. Darter was also a paleoanthropologist who had been advocating for interesting finds to fill a new anatomy museum. While dressing, the postman delivered two boxes of rocks containing fragments of bones excavated from a limestone quarry near Taungs in the Transvaal region. In his memoir, Adventures with the Missing Link, Darter described the excitement he felt upon discovering the mold of a skull. This find would later prove to be groundbreaking, as it was the first of its kind.
