Overview of Austria

Austria is a landlocked country in southern Central Europe, with German as its official language. It has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 1995, and uses the euro (€) as its currency. The country covers an area of 83,871 km² and has a population of approximately 9,158,750 as of 2024. Austria consists of nine federal states, each with its own government. The neighboring countries include Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The capital and largest city is Vienna. The highest peak is Großglockner at 3,798 m, and the main river is the Danube, flowing for 350 km.
